Tuscan Escapade- A Trip to the Middle Ages

I’m so fond of the peace and simplicity of Tuscany. I think it’s beautiful and it’s a real luxury to be immersed in history, gastronomic excellence, and the beautiful scenery.

This is the time when I sent postcards to some bloggers.

First stop- San Gimignano.

Ok, don't shoot and drive, unless gagong driver ka tulad ko! Hehehe!

Early traveler, on my way to San Gimignano
The original plan was to go to Cortona, pero nagbago isip ko.

Cypress trees are everywhere in the Tuscan landscape

San Gimignano is famous for its white wine- La Vernaccia di San Gimignano.

Vineyards

Para sa mga movie buffs, ito ang naging location ng movie “Tea with Mussolini” and Franco Zeffirelli’s film “Brother Sun, Sister Moon”.

Anyway, if you want to have an idea of how the Middle Ages in Europe looked like, this is one of the best towns in Italy to visit. Medieval palaces and streets are well preserved, so as their culinary traditions, art and culture.

Main entrance to the town

During the summer, the streets are full of tourists from all parts of Europe
A wine shop
The town has a wine museum for wine-lovers and for people who want to learn more about wines

It was like New York or Dubai of the Middle Ages dahil sa mga matataas na towers niya na parang skyscrapers noong unang panahon.

Here's one of the typical medieval palaces of the town. It's centuries old and located at the Piazza del Duomo, right in front of the cathedral

The Cathedral

Medieval skyscrapers
The Piazza della Cisterna- ang nag-iisang balon ng town

Inside the Comune, ito yung mga coat-of-arms ng mga influential families or guilds noong unang panahon. They were the rulers and principal financial sponsors ng town.
This is the house of St. Fina, the patron saint of San Gimignano. According to legend, dito daw siya tumira. At the age of 10 nagkasakit siya at naging bed-ridden. She refused to lie on a comfortable bed, at pinili pa niya na mahiga sa isang kahoy na kama.

If there's something holy, there's also something slutty here, hehehe! In the Middle Ages streets were named after the business trades, activities or historical landmarks you can find in that particular location. Halimbawa, ang street ng via dei Strozzi was named after the powerful Strozzi Family who lived in that area, ang street ng via dei Fabbri ay ang street na kung saan makikita ang workshops ng mga blacksmiths. I found this very particular street.

This is the Via delle Vergini, Street of the Virgins. Hmmm.... makes you wonder if they were really virgins at all. Hehehe (tawang manyak)!

For me, the best restaurant here is the Mandragola, one of the few Italian restaurants that have superbly preserved the traditional Tuscan cuisine. No photos of the resto though. I was too hungry, and too busy devouring the bountiful lunch before me.

The next stop, Volterra.

Kung Twilight fan kayo, you will know na Volterra ay isa sa mga location na pinanggalingan ng mga kumukutitap na bampira, although sa movie, ang ginamit nilang town ay Montepulciano yata. Anyway, Volterra is another interesting place to visit.

The town’s street has some sort of a labyrinthine setting kaya nung pauwi na ako eh hindi ko na matandaan kung saan ako nag park ng sasakyan. This is actually my second time to visit the town, and the same thing happened before.

Ancient ruins ng Roman theatre at ang Porta dell’Arco, ancient entrance during the Etruscan civilization.

At walang vampire sa lugar na ito!

That's all for now. If you got bored, well, sorry pero ganitong klaseng travelling ang trip ko, yung kind na meron pa akong librong "The Nerd's Guide to...", ganun. Hehehe!

Hay, sarap balikan! Now, balik trabaho muna.

  3. Finally! I've been waiting for this tour tagal na.

Hindi sya boring no. Hindi lang tour eh may kasama pang history, culture and Twilight lessons he he.

Wala man lang pic na suma-shot ng fine wine or in distress while being lost in the labyrinth or fear for kumu-kutitap na vampire. O kaya kahit man lang yung pic na nakatawang manyak lol!

Nakabili ka ba ng house "Under the Tuscan Sun"?

    Nice one TG! More? :)

  4. Ride ako sa trip. It's not boring at all, it's very interesting. The Roman Theatre is really incredible. Every time I visit such places, I feel like I am dreaming. Almost unimaginable how they have lived here in Europe during those times.

    1. The place is really fascinating- since ancient times pa, and they were able to keep the remnants of two ancient civilizations, from the middle ages up to the present time.

  7. The sceneries, the streets, the winery - all brings a certain nostalgia of the places I visited in Italia. I long to sit again and eat pasta and drink tea. I do miss the sweet and delightful ice cream along the streets of Emilia.

I enjoyed the tour and hoepfully will get another chance and this time to Tuscany. Thanks for the history!
